SDNC CAPS is a community of therapists and ministry professionals who meet approximately five times annually in the North County area of San Diego. We are Christian mental health professionals seeking ways to function in congruence with our beliefs as we work with clients from diverse faith backgrounds. With theology that ranges from conservative to liberal, we are united and defined by our belief in the transforming power of Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. CAPS members represent a variety of denominations, professional groups, and theoretical orientations with Jesus as our common bond. Translating our faith into clinical practice within a typical 50-minute session that is both relevant and sensitive to our clients is a huge challenge. We look to God to guide and grow our group as we share our common victories and struggles.
Even within the Believing community there are great divides in understanding and applying Scripture. The emphasis of our group is to encourage and share ways in which we integrate clinical aspects of our practice with our faith and to explore conflicts which may occur with safety, professional content, and instruction.
. Safety ensures that discussion about sensitive matters will occur with the deepest respect for each other's perspectives.
. Professional content ensures that our presentations are directly relevant to our work. The professional dilemmas related to integrating faith and therapy are key to our time together. The presentations need to be psychologically accurate, scripturally sound, and concretely helpful to clients.
. Instruction is the most requested need for our group time. Participants want to be exposed to helpful information, processing of feelings, and leave with a sense of spiritual nourishment.
